It seems obvious to me that with the current climate emergency, we need to stop using fossil fuels ASAP and move over to something more environmentally friendly.
As heat pumps are apparently not quite up to it yet, that probably means electricity. Around 30% of our electricity generation is now from wind and other renewable sources. Hopefully, this will be scaled up fairly swiftly.
After all wind power apparently has the potential to provide all our power needs.
I understand that gas heating in new homes will be banned from 2025. But what about existing properties?
Still using gas
Obviously landlords need to be insulating properties properly and that goes without saying. But focusing just on the heating issue – gas central heating systems are still being installed by landlords and home-owners – with special offers galore.
Why? Surely gas in existing properties should be being phased out too, not encouraged.
However, when I have written about this before I get told that
- Gas is the obvious choice as it is so much cheaper, and
- It is recommended by EPC reports as a suitable improvement and rewarded by higher energy efficiency ratings
So up and down the country people are, probably as you read this, installing gas central heating in their homes.
Surely this is madness?
Bungs from fossil fuel companies?
I am assuming that this situation – the relative cheapness of gas compared to anything else, is down to tax breaks and other financial incentives given to the companies which provide the gas. Plus it seems that many of us are forced to invest in these companies whether we like it or not under our pension schemes.
Which is not, I have to say, something I am happy with. It’s part of our crazy economy which seems to be geared to create conditions most likely to accelerate global warming as quickly as possible.
We are currently in the run-up to a general election. Maybe everyone should write to their parliamentary candidates and point these things out. If everyone does it, they will have to take notice.

Dear [name of candidate]
I understand you are a candidate for the [your consitutency] constituency in the forthcoming General Election. Can you answer a question for me, please?
Gas is a fossil fuel and I understand it will be banned from new properties from 2025 as part of our move to a clean low carbon economy.
- Gas is still the cheaper option in most cases and is frequently promoted via special discount offers
- It is recommended as a suitable improvement by Energy Performance Certificates, and
- Properties with gas central heating are rewarded by higher energy efficiency ratings
Surely discounts for gas central hearing should be outlawed and it should no longer be a recommended improvement suggested by landlords Energy Performance Certificates?
If we are to move to a low carbon economy, we need to ensure that green electricity and other low carbon alternatives are promoted and become the cheaper option, not the most expensive.
Please, can you let me know what steps you and your party will be taking to deal with this situation?
